Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of summer. It’s the long weekend just before graduation and the kids are out of school. Traditionally observed on the last Monday in May (May 29th for this year), It’s a three day weekend for most Americans that involves barbecues, camping, camping and other outdoor adventures and for shopping – retailers love to pump out sales! So here are some tips and ideas on how to spend your Memorial Day Weekend.
Sun Protection – Wear your sunscreen! Block the UV rays. Remember to protect the little ones and your pets too. Pets can get sunburned too and they make sunscreen to protect their hairless parts so lather them up too! And let’s remember to not leave children and pets in the car when the temperatures rise. A car can get 30 to 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature.
Get Grilling – Time to fire up the grill! It’s the classic barbecuing weekend. Hotdogs, hamburgers and all the classics are on the grill. But make sure you have the essentials. Do you have all the tools and ingredients to make your barbecue successful? Make sure you have enough gas or charcoal to get you through the weekend. You don’t have to be a culinary superstar to have a successful barbecue. There are plenty of websites with easy recipes and great ideas to make your spread a patriotic stand out.
Red, White and Blue – You will see plenty of red, white and blue on this weekend. You’ll see the American Flag everywhere and many unique ways people will show their patriotism. If you are great with crafts there are plenty of ways and plenty of websites for ideas to celebrate the weekend. Make a stars and stripes wreath for your door, design a t-shirt or turn your food table into a patriotic spread!
Road trip – Gas up the car and pack up some snacks and grab a map (or ask Siri), get your playlist ready and take off! There is so much to see in every state and there is no better way than seeing it on your own terms. You can take your time, make stops and just take it all in. And whether we like it or not, technology makes it a little easier. There are endless apps that can help you with your trip, such as RoadTrippers, GasBuddy, HotelTonight and the list goes on and on.
Get Outside – Let’s hope wherever you are you have great weather. Kick off the “unofficial” summer kickoff outside! It’s also the start of camping season. Enjoy a campfire and s’mores while sleeping under the stars. Take a visit to a state park or beach. You can enjoy a nice hike or enjoy a picnic with the family. And if you are looking for another outing with the family check out your local sports teams and see who is in town. Many professional sporting teams across the country have a fireworks show on Memorial Day Weekend.
There are plenty of things to do to stay busy this Memorial Day Weekend or if busy is not what you are looking for, take the extra day to simply relax!
Whatever it is you choose to do this holiday weekend remember to stay safe and have fun!
